The Challenge: Education in the 21st Century

In the 21st century, students need skills that cannot be mechanized: critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, and leadership. Yet humanity has entered its fourth industrial revolution while education lags behind. In Armenia, dying professions remain fashionable among youth, and the gap between what schools teach and what the economy demands continues to widen.

Forum participants agreed: the education system will shape future leaders only when education is treated as an absolute value, and all stakeholders, the state, parents, teachers, students, and communities, share equal responsibility for its transformation.

Skills for the FutureStudents need critical thinking, creativity, emotional intelligence, and leadership: skills that cannot be automated. Schools must evolve to develop these capacities.
Education-Economy AlignmentA disconnect exists between education and industry. Professional orientations in schools must become more meaningful, creating real interaction between educational institutions and the economy.
Shared ResponsibilityAll stakeholders, state, parents, teachers, and students, must be equally responsible. School-parent partnerships must leverage the strengths of both sides.
Educational JusticeIt is critical to dispel the fog of low expectations and ensure educational justice, not merely equal conditions, but equitable opportunities for every learner.
National Identity & ValuesPreserve national identity, cultural values, and respect for education. A flexible system grounded in both national and universal values must be created.

No vision can become a reality unless it is co-created with its immediate beneficiaries. Change must stem from the needs of the community, not be imposed from outside.

Proposed Solutions by Theme

Schools & Learning Environments

Open alternative schools and implement Project-Based Learning. Design both schools and landscapes to promote learning. Create platforms to constructively discuss community issues and make schools centers of learning. Schools should create environments that enable student self-expression, so students realize their responsibility for effective learning.

Teachers & Pedagogical Practice

Provide teachers with necessary knowledge and resources. Give teachers flexibility in their work, which promotes flexibility and independence among students. Lead the teachers’ community toward Inquiry-Based Learning, developing engaging activities, quizzes, active learning lessons, and collaborative group assignments. Establish cycles of continual improvement of resources to form a self-learning pedagogical community.

Students & Youth Leadership

Promote leadership skills among students. Give students freedom of choice and let them express opinions freely without judgment. Rethink student councils operating in schools. Students who make mistakes and learn from them during school years become leaders. Create an environment in all communities where everyone can express themselves.

Parents & Community Engagement

Create a clear parent involvement strategy with a developed activity plan and road map for implementation at each school. Build school-community partnerships that leverage the strengths of both sides. Raise existing problems in public education and organize frequent public discussions among all education participants.

Economy & Technology

Bring education development in line with industrial development through innovative approaches. Make professional orientations in schools more meaningful to guide students toward future professions. Increase state-level financing of the IT sector so that IT training centers of various formats spread throughout the country. Create interactions between educational institutions and the economy.

Systemic & Policy Change

Unite education stakeholders and find joint solutions. Involve all stakeholders in policy and strategic development. Develop collective leadership and ensure development from within communities. Base education on national and universal values. For long-term changes, transformation should stem from community needs rather than being administered from outside.
